The description was great and it looked like it was going to be a fun, fast read.It did not wind up that way. "The Replacement Wife" was a disappointment. The heroine is a strong woman with a backbone. She was not the problem. The problem was totally the hero, Theo Markou Garcia.Theo is a half Cypriot/Cuban man who grew up in Miami in dire poverty. In his teenage years while working in manual labor he comes upon the wealthy Whitney family while on vacation. He sees how they live and how "perfect" their lives are and develops a fixation on them, especially their "perfect", blond daughter, Larissa.Fast forward fifteen or so years. The Whitneys are wealthier than ever, and Larissa has grown into an international star without any talent - namely, she is famous for being famous. She leads a vapid, spoiled life. Theo has gotten his MBA, meets Larissa, starts dating her and becomes engaged to her. But theirs is not a conventional engagement. He manages to get a job in the Whitney's conglomerate, works his way up fast and is now the CEO of their corporation. Larissa loathes Theo, while he worships her. Larissa is in an accident and winds up in a coma, and is diagnosed with the possibility of never waking up again.Enter our heroine, Becca Whitney. Theo worked out an agreement with the Whitney family when he became engaged to Larissa that he would receive all of Larissa's stock and wealth in the company when he married her. Theirs is an arranged marriage. With Larissa in a coma, Theo cannot get his hands on Larissa's stock, which will enable him to run the entire conglomerate unopposed. Theo needs a lookalike to fool the world into thinking that Larissa is alive and well and still leading her vapid, spoiled lifestyle.Our heroine, Becca Whitney, looks a lot like Larissa. Not surprising, considering she is Larissa's first cousin. However, Becca is not a blond, she is a brunette, she is heavier than Larissa, and her eyes are hazel, not green like Larissa's. Theo puts Becca through a harsh training program to get her to lose a lot of weight and learn to dress like Larissa and have her mannerisms.Becca is a strong, independent woman with backbone and sass. She is the best thing in this book. Becca also happens to be the poor, looked-down-upon relation in the family. Becca's mother was run out of the family when she became pregnant out of wedlock with Becca, and she, Becca and Becca's sister live a life of poverty as a result. Becca's mother dies when Becca is 18 years old, leaving Becca to raise her younger sister by herself. Becca goes on to become a Paralegal and her sister wants to go to an Ivy League college. Becca cannot afford to send her sister to college, but she desperately wants to. She will do anything to get the money to give her sister her dream.Theo learns of Becca's need for money and gives her the lifeline she needs. He will give her the fortune she should have received in the first place as Becca's mother's heir if she will sign a contract saying she will never tell anyone that Larissa is in a coma and that she is portraying her. Theo then makes Becca go through all sorts of humiliations learning how to be Larissa. He treats her coldly and with disdain, trying to keep her in her place, despite the fact that he has fallen like a ton of bricks for her the second he meets her. Loving Becca gets in the way of his getting his stocks and gaining control of the corporation. He also still has a fixation on the rich, wealthy, vapid, famous, comatose Larissa.Becca has fallen in love with Theo herself. We are constantly told how handsome Theo is, how powerful, how compelling he is. Theo manages to get Becca to lower her guard and becomes her lover. He is an incredibly fabulous lover, and they make love like rabbits all of the time. But he treats her like dirt. The reader is left asking why does this woman who is strong, intelligent and beautiful allow herself to be treated like dirt, allow herself to be used as a sex toy by a man who has no idea what love is or feels like, and still loves this man as a result He makes her feel insecure that she is not Larissa, he never stands up for her to protect her from her vile Whitney relatives. He leaves Becca to twist in the wind to fend for herself all of the time. This is love This is a hero we are supposed to like and root for Why Why does this woman even love him He is unlovable in my estimation. Even at the end of the book, when they profess their love for one another (and wind up in bed yet one more time), Theo comes off as cold. That kind of hero may turn on some women. It was a turn off for me. I hated this book. It disappointed me greatly, and I suggest to the author that she create heroes who are interesting and have warmth to them, not a cold, overly ambitious and broken one like Theo Markou Garcia. He's not worthy of this heroine. Becca is far too good for him. He belongs with the empty, vapid, useless Larissa instead.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Great!By Lynne D.
