The whys and hows behind the movement of nations against each other and the epic battles that ensued. But I usually lose interest in history books that chronicle such events, because I don't feel like I get inside the human dynamics that existed between the people who make the decisions. This book took me straight inside the heads of the men in power. The main characters are Mehmet, the Sultan of the Ottoman Turks, and Constantine XI, the reigning Greek Emperor of Constantinople. I really got a sense of both these men as human beings with desires, emotions, hopes, self-doubt, and every other basic emotion that we all can relate to.Mehmet is young, insanely ambitious, and fighting to prove himself. Constantine is middle aged, struggling to hold onto the last shards of a once thriving city and his own honor, and the woman he loves, Zophia. Both men have very different agendas, making them the perfect dramatic pair to clash together. This contrast sucked me in from the beginning of the book. The author made it seem like both men were up against insurmountable odds. I was shaking my head and laughing at the train wreck that Mehmet and Constantine were stepping into, both fully aware of how crazy their situations were.Definitely a great read if you like history, but think history books are boring!108 of 110 people found the following review helpful.Loved it!By June MottersheadWritten as a novel, this is a very enjoyable and balanced account of a complex historical event. It is historically accurate (I checked!) but, unlike most history text books, the facts are presented in very readable prose. It is interesting from both a historical and a stylistic perspective. I liked the fact that the reader is drawn into events from the viewpoints of both Mehmet and Constantine, this serves to constantly shift the reader's sympathy from one to the other. The love story between Constantine and the only fictional character, Zophia, gives the novel a 'human interest' perspective, however, as an long-term inhabitant of the wonderful city that is modern Istanbul, I have to confess to having started the novel with a pre-existing leaning toward the Ottoman cause. That said, what the novel really did for me was make me want to find out more, it also reinforced my view that there are always at least two sides to any conflict; this novel presents both sides and allows the reader to form their own opinion about events. Highly recommended :).35 of 35 people found the following review helpful.Wonderful historical fictionBy James PankiewiczBefore starting this book, from the study of history I already knew which army wins the battle. Still, while reading, I was in suspense right up until the end of the story.I appreciated the juxtaposition of the moral certitude held by both sides. "God's will" and "Allah's will" were portrayed battling as much as the armies. The siege and the story is also a battle between Constantine's will and Mehmet's will. It was fascinating to read how much personal doubt each of them had about what to do next and how much pushing and pulling they were receiving from their own advisors. The author's extensive historical research and knowledge show throughout the book. I felt like I was there watching history happen. While the author adds some fictional elements, (clearly identified at the end) these made the book even more enjoyable.People who enjoy historical fiction will think this book is a winner. Even if you aren't a fan of history, this is a well told story.See all 325 customer reviews...
