JasonThe overall aim of the book appears to be a call to arms to all Christians (or perhaps only Church of England Christians) to take back what Carey believes is rightfully theirs both from an historical perspective and a moral perspective. There are essentially three stands to the discourse:i) English Christians are being persecuted as a consequence of a government led multicultural drive in society, by secularists and by atheists. Later in the book Carey attempts to dilute the persecution claim, however the effect of the original assertion is only partially amended and one is still left with the feeling that Carey is hysterical.ii) That Christians have a right to be heard under the terms and conditions of "tolerance" and that even extends to their justified dislike for homosexual behaviour. Some excellent examples are given that do less to support a Christians right to be heard and do more to support some views that at least one Christian is out completely out of touch. Examples such as the lady who comes to blows with a local government because she refuses to enact "civil partnerships" of same sex couples because of her Christian beliefs. Carey calls this persecution. I wonder if Cary would equally call a person persecuted that obtains a job in an butchers and then refuses to handle or serve meet because of their belief in animal rights. Civil partnerships are a legal act and not a religious one. Another striking quote Carey makes is that like skin colour, relgion cannot be left at the door when you enter work. This perfectly absurd and a willful misunderstanding of what is not chosen (skin colour) verses what is chosen (religion). It is clear that ones beliefs go where one goes, however unless one is perfectly rigid a belief is mutable. This cannot be said for skin colour. Sadly Carey again tries to associate himself with a truly persecuted set of of people.ii) That many Christians are just not being Christian enough and should jolly well pull up their socks and be better Christians. Only then can they make England truly Christian again, through their historical indoctrination and the preferential treatment that are entitled to from the government and the English population. So be done with multiculturalism, make everyone have to integrate into a stronger Christian society. In the end the book just falls flat and feels more like a last whinge from an unhappy and confused Christian. There are a few quite interesting parts at the beginning of the book, that appear to have been written by his son Andrew, at least they appear to be trying to appeal to a younger readership. The mentioning of the latest technology and social networks are somewhat out of place to the central argument. However the attacks on Atheists, which are apparently represented by Richard Dawkins, and secularists are rather revealing. Carey appears to have willfully misunderstood the arguments of Dawkins. The central theme of Dawkins is that Religion is truly anti-intellectual, anti-scientific and a total tautology. Claiming all things start and end with God doesn't really explaining anything at all, it just avoids the entire point of life the universe and everything else. The fact that Christianity has been around for a couple of thousand years doesn't make it any more correct as an explanation, it also doesn't prove that it is The authority on moral behaviour, thought, philosophy or anything else. If time was the soul basis on which we should believe things then monotheism wouldn't be anywhere in the running.Carey's attacks on secularism are equal wrong headed. It seems fair that he might try to attack secularism for its lack of coherent moral philosophy, but it can be built and people are trying. However complaining that secular society persecutes Christians is a little exaggerate. The point of trying to stop peoples religious beliefs interfering in certain aspects of society is that people appear to want transparent and logical explanations for decisions. For example if Tony Blair came out and said that he went to war in Iraq because God told him to, then most people would be justified in calling in to question his judgement. Receiving a parking ticket from a traffic warden because the traffic warden claims that they heard God tell them to do it would also lead most of us to wonder whether this was a reasonable argument. Secular society is not about persecuting religion, it is about having sound and justifiable laws, governance and participation based on collective responsibility. All in all the book was a really enjoyable read and provides some rather good reasons to call into question Carey's judgements and opinions. I for one would invite him to any consultation as a perfect example of an outlier.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. We don't Do God.By Mrs. Anna F. It should be required reading for every seminarian, sociologist, and politician - whether they consider themselves a person of 'faith' or not.See all 3 customer reviews...
