Sure, I watched some classic spaghetti westerns and read some not-so-good novels set in that time and place, but this book is something else.It tells the story of Joaquin Murrieta and it ticks most of the familiar boxes – he is a hero, there is a love interest, there are evil enemies that he must defeat, sand, horses, sunsets and sunrises... That doesn't take anything from the quality of the novel, of course, that are just staples of the genre. What surprised me is how well it is written in every aspect, from the clearly well done research of the period to the stylistic choices and beautiful descriptions that are mostly not overdone or recycled. The thing that impressed me the most is the unique narrator, the spirit of the main character, more precisely, his severed head. That might be something that can put off some of the readers who like more realistic approach to their western-themed literature, but it is definitely an original element and something that sets this novel apart from others.A wonderfully written, exciting and dynamic novel that I can recommend to anyone.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Riveting and exciting!By KendraI, Joaquin, is not a typical revenge story. Joaquin is a very interesting character, whose story is riveting from beginning to end. From taming a wild stallion, to surviving a panther attack, to wooing and capturing the hearts of many women, Joaquin is a powerful man who exudes intelligence and skill. He's a force to be reckoned with and a worthy rival of his various enemies. Joaquin's story is filled with action, romance, revenge, passion, and intrigue. It has all the elements of a great story and not one word is wasted.I found it far more engrossing than many revenge stories, as it avoids a lot of the cliches and tropes of the genre. Melvin Litton is a brilliant writer. His descriptions are beautiful, his dialogue is realistic, and his research was obviously spectacularly done. This is a flawless book, which will surely be enjoyable to almost anyone who likes an exciting, memorable, adventure. I loved it a lot and I would love to read more of Litton's work.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.5* Captivatingly presented history that selective editing would enhance for this reader.By John H. ManholdI, Joaquim, Crossroads Press, an e-book by Melvin Litton, is a story about the legendary Mexican bandit/revolutionary whose daring raids and activities where the scourge of California in the mid-1800’s.Plot: In the author’s words “This memoir is based on the legend of a tragic romance and one who in fact lives on in story and song, his life celebrated in many countries, his name yet voiced on many tongues, “Joaquim Murrieta” (purportedly son of a Spanish Franciscan Priest and an Indian/Mexican woman) the man, the myth, now his confessions.” He leaves home as a young teen, survives the wilderness, matures to become the vaquero/caballero of his dreams, seeks gold in California where he and his family are brutally attacked and he embarks upon his deadly career of revenge, banditry and eventual attempted revolution.Discussion: The basics in this tale actually describe quite accurately any number of occurrences that arose repeatedly from the unfortunate chaos following the Mexican War. More problems were added shortly after war’s end when gold was discovered in California. An influx of greedy, self-centered, ignorant, intolerantly cruel individuals arrived in droves. Laws were poorly defined, or did not exist. President Polk had sent Nicholas Twist to negotiate the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo guarantying Mexican Nationals ownership of their land if they wished to stay BUT, congress never ratified the article pertaining to retention of the land grants. With the pressure of thousands of new arrivals, the lands and property of these owners was needed, was confiscated or the owners were ‘eliminated’. Local policing was almost non-existent. Los Angeles reportedly was experiencing at least one killing per day and every crime known to man existed at all levels throughout the newly acquired terrain. Joaquim Murrieta provided a classic example of the era, almost revered by Mexicanos, hated by the ‘gringos’ and many Tejanos. The author has employed an interesting approach in presenting the story. Very early he informs the reader that Joaquim’s head is providing the story and follows with a very detailed account of his activities from his birth until his death and for a considerable number of years beyond. The tale moves along at an acceptable pace, depicts quite well much of the terrain, the arrogant attitudes of the Mexican Vaquero/Caballero, his dress preferences, his ‘mind set’, explicit details of sexual activity and the often unnecessary cruelty and general activity and attitudes of all individuals of the period. Also depicted are some of the beliefs held by the more simply indoctrinated local dwellers. Joaquim is a heroic/tragic figure who discovers a true sole-mate at a very early age, returns as a youth to claim her and lives a happy fulfilling life until his family is cruelly attacked. Although he is able to rebound, his Rosita cannot and he embarks not only upon revenge, but starts an individual vendetta against the dominating Nortaneos with their thoughtless, often cruel and senseless dominationConclusion: A well written story providing interesting material about a chaotic interval of American history through the eyes and thoughts of a controversial legend from this period. Regrettably for this reader, additional editing of the metaphysical/philosophical portions would greatly enhance this ‘in depth’ story of this intriguing man.See all 31 customer reviews...
