The first half was so good I couldn't put it down. Too bad that stopped about 60% through in the book. Janice is a very interesting, well developed character. Coming to grips with being an outsider coming home to where she never fit in, coming to grips with her mother's death is very well written. Having a parent die tragically, I related so much to how well that was written. Troy is an extremely likable, complex character. As the book goes on, more of his background vulnerability comes out, I very much wanted him to have a happy ending. Then the book starts to fall apart. The father is poorly written barely integrated into the story. Janice stays home to be with him after the funeral, causing her major problems with her job, then eventually moves home to be with him. Yet she spends very little time with him, he's rarely written about, their relationship is not delved into, nor is his grief ever addressed. It makes the book unbelievable. The rest of the book feels like it's rushed through to be completed. I disliked the way their romance was completed I felt very unsatisfied. That TOTALLY outweighed the beginning of the book. It's one of those book that starts good, but doesn't hold together by the mid-to-end of book.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Couldn't put it downBy Sue B.I forgot how much I love a really good romance novel. Most of what I read now is a mixture of fantasy, horror, and science fiction with the occasional satire or bizarro thrown in for good measure. There was a time when I read a lot of romance novels...The main character returns to her small town roots when her mom dies suddenly. Thankfully, I don't know what it's like to lose a parent. So, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to relate to the main character. Then I read an essay on how the author dealt with the loss of her own mother while completing this book and I knew from that essay that the book would be written in a way that would make my worry a silly thing. So I picked it up...and never put it down. Well, unless you count falling asleep while reading and having to dig my phone out of the sheets.I thought it was a little cliche; but it's a romance novel...isn't it impossible for a story in that genre to not feel a little cliche That's not an insult to this story in any sense. I think that feeling of familiarity is part of what made this so good for me.The characters are well drawn and believable. So believable that I laughed out loud a couple times because I've known people exactly like some of them. I love that the characters have grown and changed from who they were in high school (well, most of them anyway). There is a touch of the paranormal mixed in here that was the perfect undercurrent to the main storyline. I loved how it kept the heroine off balance. This is a quick read with a very satisfying ending that left me feeling glad I read this book and thinking maybe I should pick up a romance novel more often. Or something else written by Jennifer Melzer...1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.DELIGHTFUL, LIGHT HEARTED READBy Brenda RA phone call in the middle of the night lets Janice McCarty know that she must return home after eight years. Her mom has had a stroke. Before she can get to the hospital, her mom is gone. Janice had spent her youth working on getting out of the small town in which she had grown up only to be shown that living in a small town is not that bad.Janice's life is made even more complicated by former football star, Troy Kepner, who always seems to show up when she needs a knight in shining armor. Troy also knows, just like Janice did, what it's like to have big dreams. He had sacrificed his dream to run the family farm after his dad died. Now he is going after Janice, the girl who got away.Janice has to deal with so much emotional tension: her mother's death, worry for her father's well being, reestablishing friendships, being torn between going back to the city or moving back to a town she fled from 8 years earlier. On top of these jarring emotions but she is also falling in love AND the spirit of her mother is also contacting her. Time, however, can change a person. Janice begins to see the big city for what it is: impersonal and how much it contrasts to the "everybody knows everyone/thing" life of a small town.Home is definitely where the heart is and HEART AND HOME proves this in a most delightful way. A fun and thought provoking read. I definitely recommend this book.See all 27 customer reviews... Teach-nology.com - Worksheets Lesson Plans Teacher ...
