There were some sections in all of these books that were stellar segments of writing, but most of it was disjointed as he traveled through time from the future to his main characters past, and the transitions were not well done. He would have been better off writing two groups of novels - one a futuristic alternate earth story focused on his characters of the future, and the other a set of novels about living as a soldier during a war and surviving an apocalypse in that time frame. If he had written this as two separate books without the inserted political drivel, both would have been good - but with the confused disjointed jumping back and forth, it was a bitter disappointment. Especially as I had looked forward to reading novels that were about the characters from a short story about the Horseclans which I had previously read.I am not sure if this one did it (I read the entire series since I had already bought them) but there was also a lot of repeating of earlier writing incorporated into later books that were something of the entirety of the Horseclans sections without any new material of substance about them. Some added new material to previously written sections or added the same story line from a different point of view, but it was interspersed between sections on his other topic.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A step back in the timeline, but packed with plenty of action.By gloine36Robert Adams takes his futuristic fantasy series, The Horseclans back in time with his seventh entry into the series. Set in the time just after the prologue setting in the first novel, The Coming of the Horseclans, this book is set in the time where the clans crossed the Mississippi River. Horseclans Odyssey is one of the best books in the entire series in my opinion. Here Adams has hit his stride as an author and puts together a solid book that goes deeper into the details than any of the others to date. The carnage and death toll do not slow down. Literally thousands of people die in this book as the results of battle, but it is interesting to see Adams write about a world where modern technology has disappeared and the descendants of the US have formed feudal nations and battle for control of resources and land. The pages are full of swords sorcery like the classic pulp fiction the books are derived from. The characters are developed a bit more in this book, but there are also quite a few, so some get little attention. All in all, this is escapist literature. It is definitely not high fantasy, nor was it intended to be such. I am wondering how the Game of Thrones crowd sees these books. While not as complex as GOT, Adams has plenty of action on almost every page. Unfortunately, the publisher did not employ a proofreader. Typos on every page. Very distracting. Also, the new covers are nice - but not accurate.
