There is surprisingly little common ground between the two senses of the word in contemporary usage and this is perhaps a result of the shift away from religious world views according to which dignity in both senses is founded our having been created in God's image. According to traditional religious views we all possess dignity in the first sense but only certain individuals possess dignity in the sense of special achievement. Those possessing this sort of dignity might be said to come closer to the qualities of the Divine.One of the remarkable features of the book is its amazing multi-disciplinary breadth. Here are discussions not only of philosophy and the history of ideas but also of history, evolutionary biology, political economy and even a few classic movies. The purpose of the wide-ranging discussion is neither to impress nor simply engage the reader (though it has these effects) but to explore and eventually defend the idea of dignity as a quality which remains for us a virtue despite, and possibly because of, the enormous changes in world view which have resulted from conceptual shifts in the history of ideas in general and evolutionary theory in particular.The combination of philosophy, history and literature is reminiscent of Alastair MacIntyre's project in After Virtue, so it is not surprising to see MacIntyre emerge as an important figure in the final chapter in which Bontekoe sees dignity as achievement emerging from the pursuit of justice and truth as "regulative ideals," ideas in a pragmatist sense which we may approach but will never completely attain. Other philosophers, from both Europe and the English-speaking traditions, figure prominently and relevant aspects of their theories are concisely and precisely articulated, criticized and adapted to produce an engaging and thought-provoking theory of dignity.See all 1 customer reviews...
