Brother and sister go into hiding, depending upon that servant to bring them food and news. They are sent to a friend's house for assistance and what must they do but compound their idiocy by masquerading as highway robbers. Yes, it's our heroine's stupid idea. They're so ill fortuned as to hold up their guardian, a duke, whom they have never met and who is coming to their aid. Then they have the gall to wonder why trouble follows them.I utterly lost patience at that point and quit reading. (spoilers)By Liberry LadyI was reading along, enjoying the story, noting some problems in grammar and usage (but not spelling, oddly), until I got to 54%. The h and her twin brother had gotten embroiled in a murder and were in hiding. Their guardian showed up to help them out, and had the predictable reaction to the h's great beauty. It was mentioned several times that his guardianship would be over within a matter of months, with the twins' 21st birthday. He and the h (sorry, I've forgotten their names) flirt some, and then they exchanged some smoldering kisses. This seemed kind of unethical on the part of the guardian, but I kept reading. Suddenly, though, at 54%, he's undressed both of them and they are ready to go at it. That was when I stopped reading.I know a lot of people don't like people reviewing books they haven't finished, and I've even finished books I didn't like much just to be able to write a review. But this development sickened me, and I couldn't go further. We all know what to call men who have sex with younger women who are beholden to them for finances: molesters. This guardian had no more ethics than a boss who could fire an employee if she didn't have sex with him. Yes, she wanted what was happening, but that has nothing to do with anything. An ethical guardian would have put her aside gently but firmly, telling her that after her birthday he would apply to her brother for permission to court her, but that until then, they couldn't see each other in this way. No amount of pouting or throwing herself at him should have shaken his resolve to be an honorable gentleman and guardian. I couldn't finish a book about a cad who takes advantage of a girl's innocence.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Period pieces need *some* sense of the period.By Literate - usuallyThis isn't badly written in the technical sense of grammar and sentence structure, but the characters and the plot were so out of period that it was a DNF for me. Ms. Conn should stick to contemporaries because her sense of the Regency time period is awful. The characters speak a partial slang from the period a good 75 years earlier. Imagine a Georgianna Darcy archly saying "'Lud, sir!" and posing with her fan and cringe with me. Both the twin protagonists were TSTL. When a grasping young woman is found murdered, everyone thinks its natural and unremarkable that she would have told a man not related to her that she was pregnant by Mandy's twin brother, whom she hoped to marry. And *everyone* instantly accepts this as a believable motive for the guy to kill the girl without so much as an examination of the corpse by a doctor to see if she really is with child. Mandy breaks her brother out of prison because the situation is thought to be so awful for him as he awaits trial for murder and they want to institute a wider search for a missing servant who might be a witness - and they go hide in a lightless, airless, foodless dungeon room under an abandoned and ruined structure nearby and are afraid to come out lest they be caught. Prison had better food and air, and now that Mandy also had to hide, there was no way to institute the search! Morons! When the guardian Duke showed up on the scene and things got no better in the smarts department for this crew, this got consigned to the DNF file.See all 129 customer reviews...
