Hundreds of e books later, those characters and story have stuck with me. When this book popped up available for a free download, I jumped at the chance to give it a try. Boy am I happy I did! This book was so well written and addressed a subject I've not yet to see dealt with in a YA novel. When I bounced to the author's facebook page I noticed her banner said that she is a misfit writing about misfits for misfits. Well, Amen to that! I am a proud misfit and always have been. In my younger days I had self esteem issues such as the ones that inhabit the soul of the protagonist, Dani. She was very relatable for me. Liam is the perfect young man for her and that becomes more evident as the plot unfolds. Dani is an exuberant, intelligent, open minded, young woman and she is able to embrace diversity. Her best friend in high school was gay and she enjoys a romp in the local, college town, bar that features drag performers. Liam, straight, works there, so we know going in that he is open minded as well. He is very lucky to find his soul mate in Dani. I just love reading YA novels that are inclusive of all. A lifelong Californian, I have been an Oregon resident for the past two years so it was also fun to see that the book was set in Oregon. I also have been a fan of red lipstick since my mid-twenties and still proudly wear it still today now that I am fast approaching fifty nine. Long live red lipstick in all its incarnations!I don't believe in writing reviews with spoilers so you will have to trust me that this is a good read about a sensitive subject most of us have no experience with. The author's note at the end of the book was a brave one for the author to share and I applaud her candour. This appears to be the first in a series with the next book due in May 2014. She had a great sense of humor (even if most of the times she turned it onto herself), she was smart and an overall great character to get to know. She was a mix of confident and insecure and her journey was treat to read.Liam was another story altogether. I liked him fine. He was funny and keep up with Dani and pushed her to believe in herself more. I had to give him points for that alone. It wasn't until the second half of the story that I finally saw glimpses of his which helped to keep me interested in the story. Thank goodness for that or this would have been a completely different review!Dani and Liam's relationship grew from friends to lovers over the course of the story. It was slow building and sweet. I liked their rapport and how easily they related to each other.As for the concept I have to tell you that it was different from anything I've read before in the New Adult genre. The book brings about different elements that allow the reader to ponder and understand the characters better. The story is mainly about overcoming your insecurities, pursuing your dreams and accepting yourself and others without judgement with an added romance to round it all up.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.KDH Reviews: CrossingBy Kayla HarrisonThough this is the first book in the Open Door Love Story series, it can be read as a standalone.Crossing touches on a topic that is certainly different that what we normally see in love stories. For originality, it deserves 5 stars. However, I only gave it 4 stars because the story is presented, in the end, in a neat little bow. Everything about the story happens way too easily. I truly believe that this story can (and possibly does) happen as it does for Dani and Liam, but I'm not sure it's always as easy. I think I would have preferred some more tension and conflict between Dani and Liam, even if they did get their happily ever after. I guess I would have felt it was more deserved if they struggled for it a bit more. Personal preferences aside, I did enjoy this story and I loved the original storyline.If you're looking for a different kind of love story (and have an open mind), then Crossing certainly should be on your to-read list.See all 140 customer reviews...
