The main character in this book, as is characteristic of a number of the other novels, an American soldier in a post WWII society. He is supposedly taking a break from investigations into Nazi backgrounds of Germans in Berlin and is described as passionate and purposeful in his investigations. He seems in this novel to be easily led astray, not assiduous nor thoughtful in looking for the information he desperately wants and is a momma's boy. The labyrinthine canals and calles of Venice do not add anything to the plot unlike Kanon's atmospheric scenery in his other novels. The ending seems incredibly contrived and tries to tie everything up in a neat albeit messy package.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.I'm normally a great fan of Joseph KanonBy Robert C. DavisI'm normally a great fan of Joseph Kanon, but I was less excited by this book. Compared to his other works I found *Alibi* claustrophobic and obsessive, not particularly enjoyable. It struck me a bit too much like a replay of *Crime and Punishment* yet without a satisfactory resolution. Having lived in Venice for several years, I can promise other readers that Kanon's topographical rendition of the city is accurate without becoming belabored. The walk through his primary neighborhood, from the Carita' to the Salute is just as he describes it. It's a pity, though, that, like so many other foreigners' books on the city, either non-fiction or novelistic, this one rarely looks beyond outsiders' point-of-view, to the extent that actual Venetians barely figure at all in the story. Kanon situates the novel in the early spring, so there are very few tourists about, which is a blessing, except that instead he concentrates almost exclusively on the ex-pat community, with the exception of the homicide detective, Cavallini, and the leading lady, both of whom seldom raise above their own stereotypes.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful....a glimpse into complex issues...By Igor DumbadzeMany reviewers have summarized the plot, character development, etc. I have read almost all of Kanon's books - this is a very good book which is well written and deals with a topic that is absolutely fascinating - the moral ambiguities of war, where there is no clear cut distinction between good and evil; where ordinary people are thrust into situations where there is no correct response.For many of us, whose parents and grandparents were European immigrants, survived the war and lived in these very circumstances, novels like this provide a small window into their psyche and experiences. They personally never talked about any of this, so for me, this is the only way I can begin to understand their extraordinarily complex lifes.As an aside, Kanon's descriptions of Venice are wonderful; having been to Venice, this was an added highlight of the book!!See all 129 customer reviews...
